I just finished reading Redshirts (http://www.amazon.com/Redshirts-A-Novel-Three-Codas/dp/0765316994)

Overall, I enjoyed the novel. This was my first foray into John Scalzi's work.. and I will probably read more. He caters to the sci-fi nerd demographic with fitting references and almost a fan's prospective on the strengths and weaknesses of the genre. That said, without giving anything away, the story had a real circle-jerky meta recursive feel to it (although this was obviously the intention of the writer) and at the end of the day, the book felt a bit small in its scope, which is to say that Scalzi could have done more... and he could have done it slower and more subtly. I would give the book a 3.5 out of 5. It is definitely worth reading if you are a Star Trek fan, or really a fan of any televised sci-fi.
